Weed Control Pricing by Square Foot: How to Track Revenue Per Round

Sq ft pricing for weed control produces more accurate margins than flat-rate or per-visit pricing because your primary cost driver — product — scales directly with sq ft. A flat rate that's profitable on a 6,000 sq ft property loses money on a 14,000 sq ft property treated at the same price. Sq ft pricing eliminates this problem and creates a consistent margin profile across all property sizes. Here's how to structure per-sq-ft pricing for pre-emergent and post-emergent programs and how to track the revenue that pricing generates.

Setting Rates for Pre-Emergent vs. Post-Emergent

Pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control have different cost structures that produce different per-sq-ft rates. Pre-emergent applications (particularly granular) use a relatively consistent product rate per 1,000 sq ft and are often faster to apply than liquid post-emergent treatments that require careful spray coverage. Post-emergent liquid applications require more technician attention — spray pressure, coverage pattern, target species identification — and may use more expensive specialty products on difficult properties.

Set separate per-sq-ft rates for each service type. Pre-emergent might price at $8 to $12 per 1,000 sq ft; post-emergent broadleaf at $10 to $15 per 1,000 sq ft; specialty nutsedge at $14 to $20 per 1,000 sq ft (reflecting more expensive products and multiple required visits). Each program has its own rate table, applied to the stored sq ft for each property.

Minimum Charges and Small Property Profitability

Per-sq-ft pricing for weed control has the same minimum charge challenge as fertilizer pricing. A 2,500 sq ft property at $10 per 1,000 sq ft generates $25 per visit — below your minimum cost per stop once drive time, labor, and overhead are included. Set a minimum per-visit charge for each service type. For weed control, minimums typically range from $45 to $65 per visit. Properties below the minimum pay the minimum; properties above the minimum are priced at sq ft rate.

Revenue Per Route Before Dispatch

If a customer generated $380 in weed control revenue across a 4-visit season and your fully-loaded cost for that customer was $210, the gross profit is $170 per customer per season. Scale that across 300 program customers and you have $51,000 in gross profit from weed control alone.

That number, tracked per customer and aggregated across your base, tells you whether weed control pricing is working. If gross profit per customer is below target, either rates need to increase or cost needs to decrease.
