How to Track Spray Business Revenue by Service Type and Route

A spray business that tracks only total revenue is flying partially blind. Total revenue tells you whether the business is growing — but it doesn't tell you which service types are driving that growth, which programs are underperforming relative to account count, or which routes are producing the most revenue per truck-hour. Service-type and route-level revenue visibility turns financial reporting from a lagging indicator into an operational tool that influences scheduling, pricing, and program expansion decisions in real time.

Revenue by Service Type

A spray business running fertilizer, pest control, weed control, and mosquito programs needs to see revenue broken out by service type — not just aggregated. If fertilizer is generating $4,200 per week, pest control $2,100, weed control $1,400, and mosquito $800, the owner immediately sees that fertilizer is the primary revenue driver and mosquito is underpenetrated relative to the customer base size. If 200 accounts are enrolled in fertilizer and only 35 have mosquito add-on, the upsell opportunity is visible from the revenue breakdown without any manual calculation.

If the selected stops generate $1,640 in expected revenue and the historical daily target is $1,800, the dispatcher knows to add two more stops before dispatching. This is proactive revenue management — adjusting the day's output before the trucks leave, not discovering a shortfall at the end of the day.

Weekly and Monthly Revenue Trends by Program Type

Week-over-week and month-over-month revenue by service type tracks program momentum. Is weed control revenue growing as new customers enroll mid-season? Is mosquito program revenue declining in September as the season winds down? Are fertilizer program accounts staying on schedule or is revenue per account declining due to program skips? These trends are only visible when revenue is tracked at the program level over time — not just as a weekly total that mixes all programs together.

Revenue Gaps: Identifying Under-Routed Areas

Revenue tracking by geographic zone or ZIP code identifies areas where account density is high but production revenue is low relative to that density. A zone with 45 accounts due but only $1,200 in weekly revenue means the accounts are either small (low sq ft), priced below market, or not being routed efficiently. Comparing account count to revenue by zone lets an owner identify pricing adjustments, route optimization opportunities, or account mix issues that would otherwise be invisible in aggregate revenue numbers.
